The History of Japan has about 200 year’s national isolation, called “Sakoku” until 1858. After the period, a great number of new knowledge were brought to Japan, including about social system, western culture and cooking methods. This cabbage rolls recipe is said to be brought to Japan late 19 century.

However, every time when Japanese learned a new recipe, they altered the flavour to Japanese one. So, it’s worth trying to cook both original and Japanese one and see how Japanese changed the taste.

Minced meat is usually used for the inside, but I used potatoes and vegetables instead so that everybody can enjoy Japanese cabbage rolls. Enjoy cooking!:)

ロールキャベツといえば肉料理のイメージが強いですが、たまには中身に野菜をたっぷり詰めて作ってみてはいかがでしょう?:) ヒエ等の雑穀を中に詰めても美味しいと思います。

キャベツの包み方は色々ありますが、爪楊枝を使わない方がごみを出さないで済むので今回はそのやり方で包みました。

ロールキャベツは世界各国で色々なバリエーションがあるようで、ご飯を詰める国や冷ましてから食べる国もあるそうです。色々なレシピを試してみたいですね:)

105g potato starch
6tbsp soy sauce
2tbsp sake
1 1/2 tbsp brown sugar

Please use as much local, organic and seasonal vegetables as possible in your town! It makes your dish more tasty and better for the environment.
